Business line of credit explained

A line of credit is the flexible workhorse of business financing. You do not take a lump sum. You keep a limit available and draw on it as the business needs. Here is how it works.

What a line of credit is

A business line of credit is revolving capital. A lender approves you up to a limit, and you can draw funds, repay them, and draw again during the draw period. It is closer to a flexible reserve than a one-time loan.

You generally pay based on what you have drawn rather than on the full limit, which is what makes it useful for needs that come and go.

How owners use it

The classic uses are timing and readiness. A line smooths seasonal cash flow, covers a gap while an invoice is outstanding, funds an opportunistic inventory buy, or simply sits ready as a cushion for the unexpected.

Because you can draw only what you need when you need it, a line often suits businesses whose costs do not arrive on a neat schedule.

What to watch

A line of credit is flexible, which is its strength and its risk. Because it is easy to draw on, it works best with a little discipline: use it for clear business purposes and keep an eye on the balance.

Limits, draw terms, and cost are set by the lender and depend on the business profile. They are not fixed or guaranteed, and they vary.

Line of credit or term loan

If the need is a single defined purchase, a term loan with a predictable payment may fit better. If the need is recurring or uncertain, a line of credit's flexibility usually wins. Many owners keep a line open and use term loans for the big one-time projects.

As a broker, we can put both in front of you so you can compare the structure and total cost against your actual cash flow, then choose.

This guide is general education for business owners, not financial, legal, or tax advice, and not an offer of credit. Sugar Land HQ is a business-purpose lending broker, not a direct lender. Rates, fees, and terms are set by the lender and vary by lender, product, and business profile. We describe how these products generally work and never quote a rate or promise approval.
